Hello everyone, it’s Valery again!

Welcome to my Game Design and Game Study page. Here, I share my exploration of game mechanics and visual effects that I’ve been practicing and studying in Unreal Engine and Houdini.

SIDE SROLLER GAME - WINTER NIGHT

My first side-scroller game, built in Unreal Engine back in 2023.

I sourced all assets to design the environment from FAB and the Unreal Engine Marketplace.

Key mechanics include moving platforms, collectible rewards, trigger boxes, character switching, and a respawn system.

SIDE SROLLER GAME - HALLOWEEN NIGHT

My second side-scroller game features a spooky Halloween theme!

This time, I explored Unreal Engine’s Animation Blueprint (AnimBP) for smooth character climbing, built an AI system for enemies, and used Level Blueprints for dynamic interactions.

OPEN WORLD GAME - MAGICAL PLACE

Next, I launched my first open-world game project!

I refined AnimBP for better climbing and swimming animations that trigger seamlessly when characters detect walls or water.

This time, I also designed custom UI, implemented an inventory array system, and focused on elevated environment design elements.

OPEN WORLD GAME - FROGGY HOLLOW

I dove back in with the mechanical systems for my Froggy Hollow project!

I built custom some game assets and attached core functions to them.

This time, I implemented a health system where the Minitour dies dramatically when falling into traps and getting burned. And I refined AnimBP further for smoother character climbing—it looks noticeably better now!

OPEN WORLD GAME - FIGHT FOR FUTURE (FFF)

Next, I dove deep into Unreal Engine’s AI system it was incredibly challenging!

I expanded on the health system, mastered UMG for UI, experimented with EQS for queries, and tackled the toughest part: coding behaviors to direct AI enemies effectively.

OPEN WORLD GAME - BRAIN STUDY GAME

Think I stopped there? No way!

I created my first study game for research on Human Brain, Art and Art Therapy.

After reading books, research papers, and completing 15 pages of my capstone graduation paper, I designed this game to teach the fascinating connection between art and the brain. I built immersive labs, sculpted detailed brain models, crafted intuitive UI, and developed rich interactions between characters and NPCs.

VISUAL EFFECT - UNREAL ENGINE

Now is Unreal Engine’s Niagara system and VFX! As someone relentlessly passionate about art and skill growth, I finally discovered Houdini—the ultimate powerhouse for VFX. The toughest challenge? Seamlessly bringing those effects from Houdini into Unreal.
As an artist, I even took on coding!
